In my opinion, the Howl is a rebel reply to what is presented in the picture above. It is a complain on the so structured and self centered society that has been set for us. In the poem, the confusion is predominant, as the constant shift in thoughts, as well as the lack of connectedness between one part and the other, seem to portray the thoughts of a messy and dim head, which lacks the sobriety, organization and thoroughness of a modernist poem.
The modernist world is represented by Moloch, the causal of the situation shown in the picture above, as he is the heavy judger of men. Moloch, controls society, controls us and ,therefore, he is the main guilty of our pity and our disgrace as social beings. Moloch, is everything but good. He is the evil depicted in a term. He is modernism depicted in a being.
The poem gives an answer to the evil caused by Moloch, which is Rockland.
Rockland is an answer to the selfishness proposed by modernism, as shows the self-sacrifice of someone that always is going to stay with you. Rockland is support. Rockland is comprehension.
I will be in Rockland whatever you do; wherever you go to; whoever you are and seek. In Rockland, you can set your own conceptions. You can enjoy your own life. Noone will bug you. Noone will tell you what to do. Because Rockland takes out the best of us, contrary to the evil of Moloch. Contrary to Modernism.
Which read do you give to the picture above? What would have meant Rockland for the dead painter?
